While doing research for Tonga Whale Swim Tour which mostly take place in Vava’u, I ended up myself in ‘Eua as the offered price here is much suitable for backpackers.
There are 2 ways you can get to ‘Eua from Tongatapu, the main island. You may take the 6 to 7 minutes flights, which cost around $100TOP, or alternatively, you can grab the ferry, which is more affordable at around $25TOP and takes about 2 and a half hour over the rough seas where you might have the chance to spot whales during the season.
This island make me feels like home, Malaysia Kampung. Where kids run everywhere in the entire Kampung (village), playing around without any digital gadget. Except, instead of chicken everywhere, here, you see pigs more. Apart from that, the locals are very nice and friendly. I’ve been even offered for a ride while I’m kinda lost in the middle of the road to look for a market store.
While taking a bike to explore the south of this small island, I find that I’m not good in reading maps. Also, I didn’t expect that its mountain bike adventure, as I have no experience on mountain bike. Luckily it’s still a small island and I anyhow get myself to one of the attraction.
I took the 4WD tour with other travellers after I fail the bike tour attempt. I would say that it’s better to go with a 4WD tour afterall.
The afternoon tour is very chilax and enjoyable as we having some coconut drinks at this endless sea view cliff.
I can’t deny that the sunset here is very gorgeous. No matter how tired/lazy I feels, I can’t resists to take out my camera for it.
Do you know?
Geologically, ‘Eua is the oldest island in Tonga (40 million years old!) and one of the oldest in the Pacific.
