After completed Isthmus Peak, we drove ourselves to Wanaka town and have some rest before we start another hike. We started our hike at around 2.30 am as we wanted to catch the sunrise at approximately 6.30 am.
Roy’s Peak, one of the popular and best day hike track in New Zealand, is 1,578 m above sea level, 16km return, which takes around 5-7hrs for the entire track. I would describe the entire track of Roy’s Peak as uphill and zigzagging all the way up. It definitely requires a lot of determination to reach the peak.
Although it was cloudy when we hiked Isthmus Peak on the day before, it’s clear and starry night when we started our hike at Roy’s Peak. I’m kinda not fully awake and didn’t take any photos of the starry nights that midnight.
Hiking in the middle of the night is like you feels quite cold when the wind blows and feeling hot and sweaty when you keep on moving and hiking up. To wear or take off the jacket is kinda dilemma.
In the mid of the hike, there are getting more and more people surpassed us. Apparently, there are many groups of people wanted to catch sunrise too. I’ve never seen that many people hiking the same track in New Zealand.
It took me about 4 hours to reach the peak to catch the sunrise. When the sun arise, I’m more impressed by the reflection of the sun on the snow mountain!
After enjoying the sunrise, we start to head down back and I only realized that I’ve walked so much way high up to the peak! I feel lucky that I started the walk at midnight, as I don’t know where’s the peak point at and I can just keep walking up. Apart, I’m feeling very lucky and pleased to enjoy Roy’s Peak at its best! It’s the place that makes me feels that I’m in heaven.
After conquered 2 Wanaka famous peak with 24hrs, my travel-mate and I, both are exhausted and stop hiking for sometime being.
