Water plunges 153 meters over the falls making Wairere Fall the highest waterfall on New Zealand’s North Island. You can even see the waterfall from State Highway as it is extremely tall.

You can see many people cooling their tired feet in the refreshing water at the beginning of the track.

The first part of the track is quite simple and goes through the bush. It begins gently, clear Wairere Stream coming alongside within a few minutes.

Seeing and listening to the water stream makes me feel refreshing.

You will come to the first viewing platform after 45 minutes. From here, you can enjoy the spectacular view of the waterfall.

Water flows down from 153 meters above.

The second part of the track begins from here, which consists of a series of stairs, staIRS, STAIRS! It takes another 30 to 45 minutes to another lookout point at the top of the fall.

Finally, we make it to the top of the waterfalls!

After the impressively steep flights of stairs, you will come to a breath-taking view back over the valley, and the Waikato plains beyond at the lookout point.

View of valley and the Waikato Plains at the top of the waterfall.

Wairere Fall is one of my favorite waterfalls in New Zealand as I seldom come across a fall that allows me to stand and wandering around at the top of it, and even standing on the edge, with such a beautiful view!

At the top of the waterfall with Waikato Plains view.
Enjoying this gorgeous view at the edge of the waterfall.

It takes about two hours from the base to the top of the falls. Hence, please allow at least 4 hours to make the rewarding whole trip.

Discover this beautiful double rainbow corner while heading down.

Do you know?
Wairere means “stream of water, waterfall”  and is of Maori origin.
