World’s youngest geothermal valley, Waimangu features spectacular volcanic craters, enormous hot water springs, bubbling mud pools, beautiful geothermal features, and more.

You’ll be welcomed by Southern Crater at the beginning of walk.

No work is available due to bad weather, my friend and I decided to make a visit to Waimangu Volcanic Valley. This volcanic valley was formed as the result of a volcanic eruption that happened in 1886 and buried the Pink and White Terraces.

3 different types of tours, which are Self-guided Walk (NZD42), Lake Rotomahana Boat Cruise (NZD45) and Full Experience (NZD85) are offered. We booked the self-guided walk tour via BookMe.com as great deals can be found here.

This natural geothermal valley amazes me throughout the entire walk. It was suggested 2-3 hours for the walk, however, we took longer than usual as I can’t stop myself from taking photos and videos of this beautiful place.

After sometimes, we came to this insanely blue Inferno Crater. I stopped here for some time as I don’t want to say goodbye to it.

After Inferno Crater, we hike up to Mt. Haszard and the view from here is amazing!

Lake Rotomahana boat cruise is located at the end of the walk. From here, you can take the shuttle bus back to the visitor center, or walk back through the hydrothermal creations.

Do you know?
Waimangu is a Māori-language word meaning “black water”. This name comes from the water that was thrown up by the Waimangu Geyser, which was black with mud and rocks, that regularly happened between 1900 and 1904.
