Fox Glacier is a small town located on the West Coast of South Island New Zealand. Fox Glacier is famous with glacier hikes, flights and scenic walks as it is the longest of the West Coast Glaciers.
There’s a saying that out of 365 days throughout the years, Fox Glacier rains 360 days. After checking weather forecast on MetService, my travel mate and I drove ourself down to this small town to experience the awesome and exciting activity, heli hike.
Walking on a glacier is a once in a lifetime experience. Hence, for non-experiences tourist, it would be advise to take guided tour. Tour agent will prepare everything you need.
This is a natural and ever-changing environment activity. Therefore, ice features change constantly and no guarantee can be given that specific features will be seen.
Each tour have different experiences. It’s good to group with fun people. We are lucky to experience more than expectation!
This is a weather dependent activity. Luckily that the weather turns bad when we are about to leave. Otherwise, we might need to overnight at this cold place.

Fox Glacier can reach a compacted ice depth of 100 metres (328 feet), and is mostly coloured blue. This glacier was advancing from 1985 until 2009, and is currently in a retreating phase. Global warming is a fact, people, so be a green backpacker!
